Understanding the Game Variants of Poker
Poker used to be a simple game back in the days with only one variant but fast forward to the future, it is hard to keep track of the variants unless you want to look into it. Texas Hold’em
This is the most popular of all poker variants. In fact, it became widespread with its participation in the World Series of Poker Main Event. For this game, every player will get two face-down hole cards. There will be five face-up community cards available for everyone as well. The first three community cards are referred to as the flop while the fourth one is the turn and the fifth is the river. Before the flop, turn and river, there will be betting rounds. The winning player is the one with the best hand.
Omaha
In Omaha, each player will get four face-down hold cards. You have to use two of these four cards together with three face-up community cards. The betting rounds are the same with Texas Hold’em. Pocket aces or kings are not a favorite of Omaha. Online Omaha offer pot limit – the players are not allowed to bet more than the pot money.
Omaha Hi-Lo
This is also called Omaha/8. Obviously, this is similar to Omaha because it starts by dealing each player with four cards and then using the two of these cards together with the three community cards. The difference is the pot. The pot will be split between the best high hand and the best low hand. In this game, the goal of players is to get the best low hand or best high hand. There will always be two winners splitting the pot. However, it is possible that one person can win all if he has the best high and low hand.
Seven-card stud
Before the popularity of Texas Hold’em, seven-card stud was preferred by most. The game will start by dealing players with one face-down card and one face-up card. The bet will start with the player with the lowest face-up card. Like Texas Hold’em, the winner has the best hand. No community cards are dealt here.
